Picture this: It’s game seven of the World Series, tied in the bottom of the ninth inning. The home team has the winning run on third, 90 feet away from baseball’s ultimate prize. The batter swings and hits a line drive down the line. The crowd holds its breath: fair or foul? All eyes turn to the umpire for his decision that will seal the fate of two teams.
Just as the umpire is critical in the decisions that decide baseball games, so too the Holy Spirit is crucial for you in living your life for Christ. In Colossians 3:15, the word “rule” literally means to “function as an umpire.” In other words, you’ll only have true peace when you give God full reign over both your opinions and attitudes as you surrender your life to Christ. The attitude of peace that Christ alone gives replaces the attitudes of bitterness, strife, and quarrelsomeness that can take root in your heart from life’s trials. Let the peace of Christ be the umpire in your heart today as you face life’s decisions.
