New Hampshire New Hampshireprimary officially kicks off 2016 voting

By Dave Ficere

The autumn chill in the air in some parts of the country brings thoughts of apple cider, a roaring fireplace and fall colors. In college sports, it also means the advent of the phenomenon known as Midnight Madness – when some college basketball teams hold their first “official” practice of the new season and welcome fans to observe. Some programs, such as North Carolina, Kentucky and Arizona draw upwards of 10,000 fans to watch the madness.

Just as autumn gives way to winter, every four years a different kind of Midnight Madness occurs in the small town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. There, the handful of residents… Continue reading →

Microsoft foundpassworder Bill Gates stood before an audience in 2004 and predicted the end of password usage as a cyber-security measure. Why? Traditional passwords just don’t “meet the challenge” of keeping critical information secure, Gates reasoned.

Well, more than a decade has passed since Gates’ prediction and passwords are still an integral part of most cyber security protection both for individuals and businesses. Despite their continued usage, tech pundits persist in forecasting the death of passwords. A December 2015 study by Wakefield Research in conjunction with SecureAuth Corporation gave passwords another 10 years to live. Of the 300 IT decision-makers surveyed, nine out of ten said they believed the traditional password “won’t exist in a decade.”

But not everyone… Continue reading →

paradise“They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot.”

That line from the 1970 song, “Big Yellow Taxi” lamented the trend of building parking lots in the midst of nature’s beauty, but soon “paradise” could see less concrete.

According to the Urban Land Institute’s “2016 Emerging Trends in Real Estate” report, one emerging trend is what writer Patrick Sisson dubs “Pulling Up Parking Lots.”

“As many younger American opt out of car ownership, and tech trends such as ride-sharing and autonomous cars begin to change transportation patterns, many urban planners, government officials, and real estate owners are questioning if parking lots are the best use of downtown real estate,” he writes. “Trends suggest that ‘existing parking represents a suboptimal… Continue reading →

The rebounding real estate market is expected to maintain its upward trend in 2016 as it continues recovering from the crash of 2007. That’s according to the Urban Land Institute’s “2016 Emerging Trends in Real Estate” report, which characterizes the outlook for the next 12 months as rosy. Urban Land Institute (ULI) says there are several factors expected to lead the growth in real estate this year, including:

— So-Called “Second Tier Cities” Taking Off – Locales such as Austin, Nashville, San Jose, Portland and Raleigh-Durham benefit from their lower costs of living, an increasing ease of staying connected to larger city’s “main hubs” and a larger upside from affordable and available investment opportunities. In addition, these cities are seen… Continue reading →

Independent contractor or employee? Some business owners try to categorize as many of their workers as possible as the former rather than the latter. That’s because contractors are not covered by unemployment and workers’ compensation, or by federal and state wage, hour, anti-discrimination and labor laws. In addition, businesses do not have to pay federal payroll taxes on monies paid to independent contractors.

However, misclassifying a worker can land a business owner in hot water with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or state regulators, so business owners should pay special attention to the difference between independent contractors and employees and know which category the person hired falls into.

The IRS… Continue reading →

employee

If you are hiring someone for either a long-term, full-time project or a series of projects that are likely to last for an extended period, you must pay special attention to the difference between independent contractors and employees and know which category the person you hired falls into.

Why Does It Matter? Both the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and individual state regulators scrutinize the distinction between employees and independent contractors. That’s because many business owners try to categorize as many of their workers as possible as independent contractors rather than as employees. They do so because independent contractors are not covered by unemployment and workers’ compensation, or by federal and state wage, hour, anti-discrimination and labor laws. In addition, businesses… Continue reading →
